Today evening Smt. Ranjani and Smt. Gayathri started their concert at Narada Gana Sabha with Saveri Varnam Sarasuda and sung it briskly in 2 kalams and with swaras for the charanam for a fully packed audience.

The varnam was followed by Thiagaraja krithi Evarani in Devamruthavarshini ragam, where Thiagaraja asks rama.."For the Siva mantra – ‘ma’ is the soul; for the Vishnu mantra – ‘rA’ is the soul; I salute these great personages who understand this detail; O Munificient Lord, praised by this Tyagaraja! What did the most eminent people determine as to who You are? And, how did they worship You? "
what a soulful krithi rendered soulfully by the duo.

This was followed by Ganamudha panam in Jyothiswaroopini ragam, (68th melakartha raga) a composition of Koteeswara iyer. (to my ears the raga sounded more like Nasikabhooshan which is the 70th melam). in misrachapu thalam followed by intricate swaras. to handle such a ragam needs lot of practice. well done sisters. Their voice blends so beautifuly while they sing.

The next krithi was Mamavasadha janani in kanada ragam a composition of Swathi Thirunal.

The main piece of the evening was in bilahari, Dorakuna of Saint Thiagaraja.Will it ever be possible to have the blessed privilege of such a Darshana? Even for ascetics involved in austerities, best among BHUSURAS or DEVAs, will it be possible? Sages like Narada and Tumburu sing His glory in mellifluous stains. Devotees of the caliber of Ambarisha chant your names in ecstasy, scattering choice flowers all over. ..cries Thiagaraja to Lord Rama. bilahari raga is handled by all composers but in different styles. its a raga which gives happiness to singer and to the listener. The amazing alapanai by the sisters gave happiness to all of us with the commendable support by the violinist. The thani was superb by Mrudhangist Sri. K V Prasad and the ghatam artiste.

The next one was a virutham or a sooladhi (in kannada) by Purandharadasa a ragamalikai. the same slokam was sung in 3 different ragas..kapi, hindholam and yamunakalyani.

They concluded the concert with an Abhang, the sisters are famous for..by Sant Tukaram in raag bairagi( the fav. raga of Lord Shiva), the carnatic version is Revathi.The sisters sing Abhangs so mellifluously. Truly a musical evening.

Sangeet Natak Akademi award for Hyderabad brothers

Renowned Carnatic vocalists, D Raghavachary and D Seshachary, who are popular as Hyderabad Brothers and have enthralled classical music lovers for decades, have been chosen for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi (New Delhi) Award for 2013.

Their names were announced during the declaration of Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna) and Akademi Award (Akademi Puraskar).

The brothers, top-grade vocalists at All India Radio, Hyderabad, have been performing Carnatic music for over 45 years. They were honoured by the state government with Kala Ratna (Hamsa) award in 2012. The other awards they received include Sageeta Vidwanmani from Sadguru Sangeeta Sabha, Suvarna Hasta Kankanam, Gandharva Gana Kalanidhi, Sangeeta Kalasaagara, Sangeeta Choodamani, Sangeeta Kalamani and Asthana Vidwans.

The General Council of the Akademi, at a meeting held in New Delhi on November 21, selected three eminent personalities in the field of performing arts _ Kanak Rele, R Satyanarayana and Mahesh Elkunchwar _ as Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna).

The fellowship is the most prestigious and considered to be a rare honour, which is restricted to a very limited number at a given time.

Currently, there are only 40 fellows of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The council also selected 38 artistes (two joint awards) from the fields of music, dance, theatre and puppetry for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (Akademi Puraskar).

Vizag sisters enthral with marathon 32-hour vocal concert

They surpass the existing world record of non-stop 25-hour carnatic vocal concert

Taking just a 10-minute break for every two to three hours on an average, Vizag Sisters – N.C. Sai Prasanthi and N.C. Sai Santoshi – presented an impressive carnatic vocal concert in their mellifluous voice for 32 hours non-stop.

As per the parameters and guidelines set by the officials of the Limca Book of Records, the marathon began on Friday 10.30 a.m. at Sri Krishna Mandir Auditorium, Seethammadhara North Extension here.

As their tireless rendition came to an end at 6:43 p.m. on Saturday with ‘mangalam’, they received a standing ovation for their tremendous effort and for surpassing the existing world record of the non-stop 25-hour carnatic vocal concert accomplished by city-based singers Indira Bharadwaj and Sandhya Sundar. The Vizag sisters sang 351 compositions of various carnatic maestros, including Panchratna Kritis of Tyagraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastry, Annamacharya and Purandaradasa kritis, among others.

The event, organised by SARI Foundation, came alive with a number of music lovers enjoying the recital at the auditorium. Though the duo has so far given 157 concerts, their longest rendition was held in Tirupati last year where they sang108 Annamayya Sankirtanas for 12 hours. "It took us four months to practise for the present event. With encouragement and support from our parents, teachers and well-wishers, we are confident of gaining an entry in the Limca Book of Records,” Ms. Sai Santoshi said.

Studying B.Tech in Gayatri Vidya Parishad Engineering College, Vizag Sisters have been practising carnatic music since they were nine-years old. "Both of them were passionate about singing right from childhood. And they never missed their music classes, even during examinations. As parents, all we had to do is to guide them to pursue their interest further,” their mother M.M.S.S. Devi said.

Prabhakar Nanduri of SARI Foundation said: "Both the sisters are immensely talented. It is an opportunity for them to create their own identity where the entire world recognises their love for the art.”

Vizag Sisters were conferred with a certificate of Book of State Records for their longest musical journey. After the due verification by the authorities, the longest carnatic music rendition is likely to enter the Limca Book of Records.

N.C. Sai Prasanthi and N.C. Sai Santoshi to give vocal concert for 32 hours non-stop to enter the Limca Book of Records

Two sisters from the city, who have given a number of Carnatic music concerts, plan to make an attempt at breaking the existing record for the longest Carnatic music rendition.

On Friday morning, N.C. Sai Prasanthi and N.C. Sai Santoshi intend to commence a Carnatic vocal concert and try to sing non-stop for 32 hours to enter the Limca Book of Records.

"The existing record of 25 hours stands in the name of Indira Bharadwaj and Sandhya Sundar of Visakhapatnam,” chairman of SARI Foundation Seetha said addressing the media here on Wednesday.

The sisters, who are pursuing their engineering degree in Gayatri Vidya Parishad College, have so far given 157 public performances, Prabhakar Nanduri of SARI Foundation said.

Sri Tridandi China Jeeyar Swamy, who was impressed by their mellifluous singing, christened the duo ‘Vizag Sisters’, he added.

The sisters would render the compositions of the Trinity of Carnatic Music — Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Syama Sastry — apart from the compositions of other Carnatic maestros in their 32-hour effort, he said.

So far, the SARI Foundation has been trying to support the education of talented youngsters from the underprivileged sections of society and has adopted seven students from lower income families and taking care of their schooling.

"One of the students is now in college,” he said. The foundation decided to encourage the rich cultural talent among youngsters of the city, and this was the first such step, he added. He expressed the hope that such performances would help inspire other youth to take interest in our rich cultural heritage and develop their talent.

The ‘Vizag Sisters’ gave an impromptu performance at the media conference.

A number of Carnatic exponents have come forward to attend the programme as observers.

The programme is scheduled to begin at 9.30 a.m. after a brief inaugural ceremony.

Carnatic musician TRS passes away

Carnatic vocalist and teacher T.R. Subramaniam, who infused a sense of populism in pallavi singing without compromising its complexity and classicism, died here on Friday. He was 84 and is survived by his son and daughter.

"He had an original mind and an intellectual approach to music. He experimented and his experiments were very much within classicism,” said music historian V. Sriram, who had had long discussions with TRS in Delhi when he was teaching in the music department of University of Delhi.

A post-graduate in English literature, TRS learnt music from Musiri Subramania Iyer. As he was a great admirer of G.N. Balasubramaniam, one could always find traces of GNB in TRS’ music. He knew many languages and his deep knowledge of Telugu came in handy while singing Tyagaraja kritis.

"He was with me in a concert on Thursday and went to the Music Academy to teach students on Friday morning. In the afternoon he developed breathlessness, requiring hospitalisation. But he never recovered,” said V.V. Sundaram curator of the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival.

TRS was the first musician to take part in the Tyagaraja aradhana organised in Cleveland. He visited there in 1979 and thereafter performed many times in the festival.

Mr. Sundaram recalled an incident that bore testimony to TRS’ mastery over pallavi. "He was hardly 19 and participated in a music competition organised by the Music Academy. He presented the judges a pallavi without any raga and tala. When the judges asked him about it, he said he was prepared to sing it in any raga and tala. He went on to sing the pallavi set to Mukhari and in Sankeerna nadai. He got the first prize,” said Mr. Sundaram.

Driven by an instinct for intellectual pursuit, in the 1970 and early 1980s, the "thinking musician”, as he was known, introduced a bani in pallavi singing. He simplified the execution of pallavi singing, but never compromised on the essence of music.

"He was a trendsetter in the sense that he would have a non-conformist approach to the concert pattern. He may begin it with a javali or a varnam. Today, some musicians try to imitate him,” said S. Narashiman, a Carnatic music rasika and a collector of music of yesteryear greats. TRS also popularised many modern day composers.

Essence of Carnatic Music is perpetual

The Indira Sivasailam Foundation, recently conducted a special competition titled ‘Anwesha- Quest for the best’ as a lead up to the annual endowment concert of the foundation which is set to take place on October 12. As part of the competition, the foundation invited numerous inquisitive questions from rasikas around the state out of which a total of 25 were selected to be answered at an event here by acclaimed carnatic musician, Bombay Jayashri Ramnath along with a panel of experts including Faculty members from the Advanced School of Carnatic Music, R S Jayalakshmi and Ritha Rajan.

Jayashri, who was also announced as the winner of this year’s annual Indira Sivasailam Endowment Medal answered a various questions on topics such as ragas, taalas, taala calculations, bhava and spiritualism in carnatic music. During the event, Jayashri interacted with participants from across the state and answered interesting queries posted by them. Answering the question: what gives musicians the confidence to mount the stage and give a performance in an art as complex as carnatic music, Jayashri explained that "the artist should delve into the reason for their fear. They should understand and accept it. Also, the best and only way to gain the confidence is through practice”. When quizzed as to whether there was a need for adapting of carnatic music and its lyrics to match contemporary needs and trends, she said "the very essence of carnatic music is the conversation that Saint Thyagaraja has with his inner self, which is god, this theme is timeless and will remain so. Hence there is no need for it to adapt to modern needs, since it is perpetually relevant”. She also answered questions that dealt with the intricate details of carnatic music along with the panel of experts.

Later during the session, Jayashri also distributed gifts and prizes to the winning participants whose questions had been selected.

பின் காரணமாக, இன்று ஒரு மில்லியன் பிரதிகள் விற்கும் நாளிதழாக இருக்கிறது தினமலர். எனவே முயன்றால் முடியாதது இல்லை. இங்குவந்துள்ள கலைஞர்களின் வாழ்வு வளம் பெற, சாதனைகள் பல நிகழ்த்திட, மதுரை மீனாட்சியை வேண்டுகிறேன். பெரிய மேதைகள் பங்கேற்கும் இந்த சபா நிகழ்ச்சியில், என்னை பேச அழைத்த நிர்வாகிகளுக்கு நெஞ்சார்ந்த நன்றி. ராம-சேது பாலம் கட்ட, பகவான் ராமனுக்கு அணில் உதவியது போன்று, கர்நாடக இசை செழிக்க என்னால் முடிந்த உதவிகள் செய்வேன் என்று உறுதி கூறுகிறேன்.
இவ்வாறு அவர் பேசினார்.

விருது பெற்றவர்களை, மூத்த இசைக்கலைஞர் சுந்தரம் வாழ்த்தி பேசுகையில், ''இந்த சபா ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் சிறந்த இசைக்கலைஞர்களை தேர்வு செய்து, அவர்களுக்கு விருது வழங்கி கவுரவித்து ஊக்குவிக்கிறது. இச்சேவை தொடர வேண்டும்,'' என்றார்.

விழாவில், 'வாணி கலா நிபுண' என்ற பெயரில், குரலிசைக்கான விருது, கணேஷûக்கும், வயலின் இசைக்கான விருது, காரைக்கால் வெங்கட சுப்பிரமணியத்திற்கும், மிருதங்கத்திற்கான விருது, நெய்வேலி ஸ்கந்த சுப்பிரமணியத்திற்கும், பரத நாட்டியத்திற்கான விருது, லட்சுமி ராமசாமிக்கும், நாடகத்திற்கான விருது, கரூர் எஸ்.பி.ரங்கராஜுக்கும் வழங்கி கவுரவிக்கப்பட்டது.

விருதுகளை பெற்று ஏற்புரை வழங்கிய ரங்கராஜு பேசுகையில், ''மூத்த தலைமுறைகளுடனும் விருது பெற்றேன். இப்போது, இளைய தலைமுறைகளுடனும் விருது பெறுகிறேன் என்பதில் மிகுந்த சந்தோஷம். 1956ம் ஆண்டு முதல், 33 நாடக குழுக்களுடன் இணைந்து நாடகங்களில் நடித்துள்ளேன். அப்போதெல்லாம் நாடகங்கள் குறித்து எந்த பத்திரிகையும் எழுதுவதில்லை. ஆனால், ஒவ்வொரு வாரமும், நாடகங்கள் குறித்து, 'தினமலர்' நாளிதழின் அங்காடித்தெரு வெளியிட்டு வருகிறது. இதைப்போல மற்ற பத்திரிகைகளும் வெளியிட வேண்டும் என்பது என் விருப்பம்,'' என்றார். விழாவில் சபா செயலர் மணி நன்றி கூறினார். சந்திரமோகன் தொகுத்து வழங்கினார்.

Carnatic music teacher Bombay Ramachandran passes away

He died at his residence in Chennai on Tuesday afternoon.

Carnatic music teacher Bombay S. Ramachandran, whose disciples remember him as a simple man wedded for life to music, died at his residence here on Tuesday afternoon. He was 91 and a bachelor.

An expert committee member of the Music Academy, Ramachandran, who received the title of Sangita Kalacharya instituted by the Academy in 2000, was Head of the Vocal Department in Shanmukhananda, Bombay, for over three decades.

"He lived for music… music was everything to him, wife, children, family,” Aruna Ranganathan, one of his students, said, adding he died of old age. Describing him as a person who never sought fame, she said he was active and taught till last year.

atha Pillai and T.Brinda and T.Mukta, the noted music teacher belonged to the first batch of Madras Music College. Among his students are Lakshmi Devanathan, Nandita Ravi and Geetha Raja.

Six years ago, in an interview, he told The Hindu that an astrologer had predicted that he would lead a renunciate’s life. He was right, the music teacher said, adding "music has made life agreeable, even comfortable, for me. I trained students well. Taught them raga nuances and accurate notation. Got recognised as a good teacher. I sing on the radio. No sabha concerts, but no regrets. Lack of performance opportunities is not lack of merit, is it?"

The cremation will be held on Wednesday

தனது வழக்கமான் புன்னகையோடு விஷாகா ஹரி 6-45க்குஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ண லீலை கதையை சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார். தியாகராஜரின் பிரபல "ஸாமஜ வர கமனா” (ஹிந்தோளம்) பாட்டுடன் ஆரம்பித்தார். உக்ரஸேனனின் மகனான கம்ஸன் எவ்வாறு தன் தங்கை தேவகியின் முதல் ஆறு குழந்தைகளை கொன்றான் என சொல்லிவிட்டு, ஏழாவது குழந்தை பலராமனாக அவதரித்ததை விளக்கினார்.

எட்டாவதாக ஸ்ரீவிஷ்ணுவே கிருஷ்ணனாக தேவகியின் கர்ப்பத்தில்அவதரித்ததையும், ஆவணி மாஸம் ரோஹிணி நக்ஷத்திரம், அஷ்டமி திதியில் அவர் பிறந்ததையும் அவர் சொன்னபோது அரங்கமே அமைதியாக காது கொடுத்து கேட்டது.

இவ்வளவு அழகான குழந்தையை கம்ஸனிடம் சாக கொடுக்கவேண்டுமா, ”என்னையும் என் குழந்தையையும் ஏன் நீ காப்பாற்ற கூடாது?” என தேவகி பகவானிடம்"உனக்கு நான் பாரமா?” அழுதபோது, அரங்கமே நிஸப்தமாக இருந்தது.

பின்பு, வஸுதேவர் குழந்தையை கோகிலத்தில் யஸோதாவிடம் விட்டுவிட்டு வந்ததும், வஸுதேவரும் ய்ஸோதையும் குழந்தையை கொஞ்சியதை பாட ஆரம்பித்தார் - ஸ்ரீமத் பாகவதத்திலிருந்து " அத்புதம் பாலகம்” என ஆரம்பிக்கும் இந்த ஸ்லோகம் இதோ:

தம் அத்புதம் பாலகம் அம்புஜேக்ஷணம்
சதுர்புஜம் சங்க கதார்யுதாயுதம்
ஸ்ரீவத்ஸலக்ஷ்மம் கலசோபிகௌஸ்துபம்
பீதாம்பரம் ஸாந்த்ரபயோதஸௌபகம்

மஹார்ஹ வைடூர்ய கிரீடகுண்டல-
த்விஷா பரிஷ்வக்த ஸஹஸ்ரகுந்தலம்
உத்தாம காஞ்ச்யங்கத கங்கணாதிபி:
விரோசமாநம் வஸுதேவ ஐக்ஷத

( சங்கு, சக்கரம், கதை, பத்மம் தாங்கிய நான்கு திருக்கரங்கள் , திருமறு,
கவுத்துவம், வனமாலை தாங்கிய மார்பு, பீதகவாடை, மின்னும் முடி-
குண்டலங்கள், மேகலையும் கங்கணமும். தாமரைக்கண்கள் கொண்ட அற்புத வடிவம். வசுதேவர் கண்ணிமைக்காமல் பார்த்தார்)

ஏன் அற்புதம் என்னும் அடைமொழி?

அவதரிக்கும்போதே ‘தர்ஹி மாம் கோகுலம் நய’ (என்னை கோகுலம் எடுத்துச் செல்) என்று தகப்பனுக்கு ஆணையிட்டதால், அம்புலிப்பருவத்தில் அசுரரை மாய்த்ததால், காளியன் செருக்கை அடக்கியதால், குரவை கோத்ததால், மதுரையில் காட்டிய மாவீரத்தால், வெஞ்சொல் தந்தவனுக்கும் வீடு தந்ததால், பஞ்சவரைப்பல வகையிலும் காத்ததால், போர்க்களத்தில் ப்ரம்மவித்தை பகர்ந்ததால், பகல் நடுவே இரவழைத்ததால், இன்னும் பல ஆனைத்தொழில்களால், துவாரகை என்ற பொன்னகர் பொங்கும் கடலினுள் புகுந்ததையும் ஒட்டுதல் இல்லாமல் புன்முறுவலோடு ஏற்றதால்

இந்த ஸ்லோகத்தையும் அதன் பொருளையும் விஷாகா தன் இன்னிசையால் விளக்கும்போது, ஓ என்ன ஒரு தெய்வீகமான சூழ்நிலை; கேட்க கொடுத்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

கண்ணன் செய்த பல லீலைகளில் மூன்றை மட்டும் விஷாகா இன்று எடுத்துக் கொண்டார். முதலில்,வெண்ணெய் திருடியது. .

கோபிகைகள் கண்ணனைக் குறித்து யஸோதையிடம் குறை கூறியது பற்றி ஊத்துக்காடு வெங்கடசுப்பையர்பாடலை விஷாகா ஹரி தன் தேன் குரலால் பாடிய போது எல்லாரும் கூட சேர்ந்து பாடினார்கள்.

தையலே கேளடி உந்தன் பையனைப் போலவே இந்த

காலினில் சிலம்பு கொஞ்சக் கைவளை குலுங்க முத்து
மாலைகள் அசையத் தெரு வாசலில் வந்தான்
காலசைவும் கையசைவும் தாளமோடு இசைந்து வர
நீலவண்ணக் கண்ணன் இவன் நர்த்தனம் ஆடினான்

பாலனென்று தாவி அணைத்தேன் அணைத்த என்னை
மாலையிட்டவன் போல் வாயில் முத்தமிட்டானடி
பாலனல்லடி உன் மகன் ஜாலம் மிக செய்யும் கிருஷ்ணன்
நாலு பேர்கள் கேட்கச் சொல்ல நாணமிக ஆகுதடி (தாயே)

முந்தாநாள் அந்தி நேரத்தில் சொந்தமுடன் கிட்டே வந்து
விந்தைகள் அனேகம் செய்து விளையாடினான் ஒரு
பந்தளவாகிலும் வெண்ணை தந்தால்தான் விடுவேன் என்று
முந்துகிலைத் தொட்டிழுத்துப் போராடினான்

அந்த வாசுதேவன் இவன் தான் அடி யசோதா!
மைந்தன்என்று தொட்டுஇழுத்து மடிமேல் வைத்து
சுந்தர முகத்தைப் பார்க்கும் வேளையிலே வாய்திறந்து
இந்திர ஜாலம் போலவே ஈரேழுலகம் காண்பித்தான் (தாயே)

இரண்டாவது லீலையாக அவர் எடுத்துக் கொண்டது - கண்ணனை யஸோதா உரலில் வைத்துக் கட்டியது.

எல்லாருக்கும் தெரிந்த கதைதான். ஆனாலும் விஷாகா தன் இன்னிசையால் அதைச் சொல்லும்போது நம் கண்கள் பனிக்கின்றன. ஈரேழு உலகத்திலுள்ள அனைத்து ஜீவராசிகளின் பிறப்பு-இறப்பு தளைகளை அறுத்தெரிக்கும் சாக்ஷாத் பகவானை தாம்புக் கயிற்றால் கட்டி, அவனை வாய் பொத்தி நிற்க வைத்த யசோதாவை பார்த்து பிரமனும், தேவர்களும் மற்றவர்களும் வியந்து பாடுகின்றனர் --

என்ன தவம் செய்தனை யசோதா
எங்கும் நிறை பரப்ரம்மம் அம்மா என்றழைக்க

ஈரேழு புவனங்கள் படைத்தவனை
கையிலேந்தி சீராட்டிப் பாலூட்டித் தாலாட்ட

Brothers Embrace Indian Culture Through Carnatic Vocal Music

The world of Carnatic music Aug. 17 welcomed Arjun Kumar and Arvind Kumar, students of Mukthambar Fine Arts Inc., a premier institution of Indian classical fine arts located in New Hyde Park, NY. Arjun and Arvind performed their Sangeetha Arangetram, or Carnatic vocal music debut, in a three-hour performance of difficult classical repertoire, in various ragams (musical scales) and talams (rhythms).

The brothers were accompanied by renowned artists including Sri S.P. Ananthapadmanabha on the violin, Sri Murali Balachandran on mridangam (two-headed drum), and Sri Ramana Indrakumar on Ghatam (clay pot percussion), at the Hindu Temple Community Center Auditorium in Flushing, NY.

Arjun and Arvind started their training in Carnatic vocal music at the young ages of 7 and 5, respectively, under the tutelage of their guru, Smt. Saavitri Ramanand, founder and president of Mukthambar Fine Arts Inc. On this occasion, Ramanand presented Arvind and Arjun to the Carnatic music community as professional artists in their own right and conferred them with the title of "Sangeetha Bhushanam,” which literally translates to "a jewel of music.”

Learning Carnatic music, the classical music of South India, has helped the brothers in various ways. The largest impact this process has had is allowing them to stay in touch with their culture and ancestry. Carnatic music has been a part of their family for generations, and they feel honored to represent themselves and their family with such a performance.

Their parents immigrated to the United States about 25 years ago, and Arjun and Arvind grew up in a situation that is not uncommon among many Indian American children today. Their parents, realizing that their children will not grow up in India, knew it may be difficult to keep in touch with their heritage. However, with both their parents and grandparents by their side, Arjun and Arvind found the determination and inspiration needed to continue with their studies and stay in touch with their cultural roots.

In addition to their family, the brothers also realize that none of this would have been possible without the love and dedication of their guru, affectionately known as "Aunty.” She has spent countless hours training them for their many performances. Arjun and Arvind have often performed in community events because of the opportunities that their teacher offered them. She is the driving force behind the promotion of Indian culture, not only for Arjun and Arvind, but for the numerous students whom she teaches. Since 1987, Ramanand has worked to foster learning and understanding of Indian classical arts and promote local talent to encourage growth of the Indian classical arts in the United States.

Aside from learning Carnatic music, both the brothers lead very busy lives. Arjun is a rising junior in the Honors College at Stony Brook University as part of the Scholars for Dental Medicine, B.S./D.D.S., combined degree program. He is a Psychology major, a leading member of Stony Brook Yuva, a South Asian fusion acapella group, and also conducts research in biopsychology, to name a few of his activities.

Arvind is a recent graduate from Roslyn High School and a rising freshman at Duke University. In addition to learning Carnatic vocal music, he learns Carnatic violin under Guru Ananthapadmanabha and plays keyboard for Carnatic music performances. Among his many undertakings, Arvind has conducted research in the Behavioral Sciences, plays the Western classical viola and piano and volunteers his time at St. Francis Hospital. Nevertheless, the brothers agree that singing Carnatic music is one of their most enjoyable activities and a great way to calm their nerves and clear their minds.
