Dance
combined with eight directions of sound at a concert is an experiment
only the maestroes can perform with their devotion to art. Well known
Carnatic singer Sudha Raghunathan recently performed the challenging
task, trying to build a connect with her co-artiste the well known
Bharatanatyam artiste Geeta Chandran in Delhi. Titled Ashta Darshan, the
concept was part of a project Music of Divine Love Raghuraman undertook
with a grant from the Ministry of Culture. She called her project Ashta
Darshana and approached the eight directions of sound through javalis,
various ragas, Jayadeva’s ashtapadis, touching upon delicate episodes
from the Ramayana. She kept off the story line and used swaras and tanas
to explore the emotions.
