Tribute to MDR on June 23

17th June 2013 11:45 AM

The Navarasam Sangeetha Sabha is organising a commemoration of eminent Carnatic vocalist and music composer M D Ramanathan at the Thanjavur Ammaveedu in the city on June 23.

Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan Kendra Director P K Subhash will inaugurate the event at 4 pm. Jayarajan G Valiyasala will deliver the memorial lecture on the musician on the occasion.

Vocalist Venkitaramanan will lead the ‘Panchamrutham’ music tribute with Manjula Rajesh on the violin, Nanjil Arul on the mridangam and R Ramanathan on tamburu.

Fondly called ‘MDR’ by his fans, Ramanathan was born in Palakkad on May, 21, 1923.

He gained a degree in Physics from Victoria College, Palakkad, but became ‘Tiger’ Varadacharya’s disciple and signed up for the ‘Sangeetha Siromani’ course. Though he moved to Tamil Nadu, he remained more popular back home in Kerala. He died in 1984.
